Vision of a World Fit for Children from the Hebrew Scriptures (Responsive)

Reader - 'And the streets of the city shall be full of children playing in the streets.' (Zechariah 8:5)
People - We will work and pray for the day when all children may play safely in the streets of world's cities.
Reader - 'The wolf shall lie down with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion together, and a little child will lead them.' (Isaiah 11:6)
People - We shall listen to the voices of children and help them to lead the way.
Reader - 'I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Older people will dream dreams and younger people will see visions.' (Joel 2:28)
People - Help us to walk together in hope, enabling the visions and dreams of all ages to reach their fulfillment.

Faithful Aging

  • To age faithfully is to trust the promises of God. While the specific nature of the promise may vary, depending upon particular needs and circumstances, the fact remains that God's grace is the source of God's promises. To aging persons the promise is God's loving presence and strength. To the suffering the promise is God's saving presence and help. To the sick the promise is healing and comfort. To the sinner the promise is forgiveness. To the dying the promise is eternal life. Therefore, to age faithfully is to see and know that all of life-at every age and stage-is a gift of a loving, creator God.
  • To age faithfully is to stand against the cultural prejudice about growing old.
  • To age faithfully means that we develop a new understanding of self-worth.
  • To age faithfully is to be part of a congregation that knows spiritual growth is possible and relevant for older adults.
  • To age faithfully means to practice the spiritual disciplines.

As we age faithfully we are invited to hear and respond to the words of Micah: 'With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? God has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?' (Micah 6:6a, 8).

Stewardship Corner

  • Do we take the time we need for reflection, contemplation, inner healing and growth? Do we allow our souls to recuperate when the challenges of life tax our resources? Can we allow ourselves the luxury and necessity of falling into the hands of the Eternal in the present? Are we willing to receive the gifts of creation for our own renewal and joy?
  • Do we trust life enough to invest ourselves to live abundantly - not self-indulgently, but generously? Do we accept the richness of life that is poured out on us, whether or not we deserve it, whether or not we use it well? And can we express gratitude to the Source of all life? On what days of our week do we give thanks?
