History

Strathearn United Church began on a Sunday afternoon in January, 1951, when 40 people gathered to assess the degree of interest in the formation of a new United Church in the Strathearn district. On May 6th, 1951, Edmonton Presbytery officially constituted the congregation of Strathearn United Church, with 40 members signing the Membership Roll as Charter Members.

Services were originally held in a member's home, next door to the proposed site of the church. While the church hall was being built, Sunday School and mid-week youth groups met in various members' homes. In 1952, the first section of the Church Hall was completed and, in 1953, the Reverend Dr. J. Arthur Boorman, a graduate of St. Stephen's Theological College, was inducted by Edmonton Presbytery, as the first minister of Strathearn United Church.

The next few years saw the expansion and completion of the Church Hall and, in 1959, construction was begun on the church proper, with the cornerstone laid in June of that year.

In May of 1976, Strathearn United Church celebrated its Silver Anniversary. The Rev. Dr. J. Arthur Boorman, our first, full-time minister, shared with the Rev. Dr. D.J. Clifton Elson, the Rev. R. Aiken Harvey and the Rev. Bill Burgess in a truly memorable Sunday morning worship service with special music from the Senior Choir, led by Dr. Ron Stephens. A highlight of the Silver Anniversary celebrations was the burning of our mortgage.

From the very beginning, music has been an integral part of our worship, under the leadership of outstanding music directors.

The 1990's brought new challenges and changes, forcing us to examine our vision and who we were as a congregation. In November, 1991, St. Stephen's United Church decided that it was time to negotiate an amalgamation with a neighbouring United Church. Subsequently, the Official Board of Strathearn United Church recommended that we explore the possibility of amalgamation with St. Stephen's. On October 4, 1992, our Service of Amalgamation was held - a new beginning for two communities of faith, now joined as one.

Strathearn United Church retains pride in its history and hope for the future.

The Local Community

Strathearn United Church is located in a residential part of Southeast Edmonton. Close to the beautiful river valley, this is a mature, well established neighbourhood, consisting of single and multi-family dwellings, as well as apartment complexes. The Strathearn community offers choices among elementary schools, including bilingual (French, Ukrainian), as well as, Junior and Senior High schools. There is also close proximity to the University of Alberta, Faculté St. Jean and several colleges. Residents of this neighbourhood enjoy local Shopping Centres, Library and Community Health Clinic, as well as excellent bus routes that provide convenient access to downtown Edmonton and other areas of the city.

The Strathearn area may best be described as a community in transition, with a blend of elderly and young, middle income families. Although situated in a city, Strathearn has retained a small town feel, where neighbours truly care about one another.
